Deer Island Light stands in Boston Harbor on a reef south of Deer Island, marking the approaches to Boston with an alternating white and red signal visible for nine nautical miles. A stone beacon was established there in 1832, and in 1890 it was replaced by an imported sparkplug-style lighthouse said to be the first pole light of its kind in the United States. That large structure deteriorated and was replaced in 1982, then altered again after the replacement tower was moved to Nantucket in 1984. Relocated in 2015–2016, the light now operates from a steel skeletal tower with LED equipment and radio-activated sound signaling.
