Built in April 1879 by Jo Beck as a tiny 12 foot wide addition to the E. W. Perry Clothing Store to the north, 122 North Howard first housed Beck, a respected jeweler who had already been in business for three years before moving in. His time there was brief, and he sold the business to J. E. Howard in 1883. Howard operated the City Jewelry Store until March 15, 1888, when G. M. Little, an experienced watchmaker and jeweler who had previously kept a store on the north side of the square, moved in. Though its 990 square feet limited the number of businesses that could fit there, the building later housed a barber shop in the 1890's, a millinery shop in the 1910's, and a tailor shop in the 1930's. At the end of World War II, it became Burchett's Jewelers, where Indianola couples bought engagement and wedding rings, watches, and other fine pieces for the next 34 years. After Burchett retired, the store remained a jewelry shop for only two more years. In 1981 Burgin Window Treatments opened offices there, and after a brief vacancy in 1987, Sermel Optical opened, providing eyeglasses, contacts, and other optical products and also operating under the name Optical Boutique since 2006.
