Iron Mountain, a 7,815-foot peak in southern Iron County, Utah, gave the county its name and stands as one of the three major peaks in the Iron Mountain Mining District. It was central to the region’s early iron industry because its magnetite and hematite deposits were mined as early as the 1850s, during the era of Brigham Young and the Mormon pioneers. That early mining became part of the broader story of settlement in southern Utah, and its legacy is preserved through interpretation at Iron Mission State Park in nearby Cedar City.
