Tucupit Point is a sandstone pinnacle in Zion National Park’s Kolob Canyons in southwestern Utah, rising 138 feet beside the Taylor Creek Trail and visible from the west, including from U.S. Route 40. Its striking form has made it a frequent subject for photographs. In 1873, artist Thomas Moran saw the formation while traveling south from Salt Lake City and later created a well-known watercolor of it. At that time it was known as Colburn’s Butte, named for Justin Colburn of the New York Times, who traveled with Moran. The formation was later renamed Tucupit Point, from a Paiute word meaning wildcat.
