Tukabahchi, at the Great Council Tree, was the capital of the Upper Creek Indian Nation from 1686 to 1836. Efau Haujo, Great Medal Chief, and Opothleyaholo, both Creek leaders, were born here, and Big Warrior lived nearby. Tecumseh came here in 1811 to stir the natives against white settlers, but Col. Benjamin Hawkins, principal agent for Indian Affairs south of the Ohio River, successfully opposed him. In 1823 Lee Compere established a Baptist mission school here.
