The Tallassee Armory was the only Confederate armory not destroyed during the Civil War. In the spring of 1864, Col. Gorgas, the ordnance chief, had a carbine shop moved there into the Tallassee Mfg. Co. mill as war threatened the armory at Richmond, Va. The war ended before the plant neared its goal of 6,000 carbines per year. In 1864, Rousseau's raid bypassed it. In 1865, forces under Gen. Wilson, misled by a faulty map, marched 10 miles east, and the threat of Forrest barred their return.
