Devils Island Light stands on remote Devils Island in Lake Superior among Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands near Bayfield. Built in stages, the station replaced an 1891 skeletal wooden light with a brick Queen Anne keeper’s quarters in 1896 and later support structures adapted to the challenges of an isolated post. Its north shore complex included tramways, engine and signal buildings, and other facilities for moving supplies and operating the light. The station’s equipment evolved from a third-order Fresnel lens and steam whistle to newer technologies, including a diaphone and diesel generator. Visited by President Calvin Coolidge in 1928, it remains significant in Lake Superior maritime history.
