Sevona, a steel-hulled lake freighter wrecked off Sand Island in Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands on Lake Superior, is both an archaeological site and a noted scuba-diving destination. Launched in 1890 as Emily P. Weed and renamed in 1897, the ship was lost during a violent storm on September 2, 1905, after grounding on a shoal and breaking in half. Some aboard escaped by lifeboat from the stern, but those stranded on the bow died after attempting to flee on a makeshift raft. Later blasted as a navigation hazard, the wreck remains underwater, while salvaged pieces were used to build Sand Island’s Sevona Memorial Cottage.
