Sand Island Light, on the northern tip of Sand Island in Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands, became an important Lake Superior aid to navigation after years of delay between the recognized need for a light in 1871 and federal funding in 1880. Built in 1881 of local brown sandstone in a standard Gothic Revival form, it combined an octagonal tower with a two-story dwelling. The station is remembered not only for its distinctive construction but also for the lives connected to it, including rescues, Ella Richardson Luick’s vivid logbook accounts, and the nearby 1905 wreck of the Sevona. Automated in 1921, it survived through later private stewardship and preservation.
