Muscatatuck County Park near Vernon, Indiana, began as Vinegar Mills State Park, opened in 1921 on county-donated land and soon renamed for the nearby Muscatatuck River, an Indigenous name usually understood as “winding waters.” Its earlier identity came from Vinegar Mill, an 1830s water-powered stone-cutting mill whose stone was used in local building. Lightly developed as a state park, it served travelers with modest accommodations and was notable as Indiana’s first state park needing no state financial support. Redesignated in 1956 as a state game farm and transferred to Jennings County in 1968, it later revived and now offers nearly ten miles of trails.
