Meramec State Park near Sullivan, along the Meramec River about 60 miles from St. Louis, is both a recreation area and a historic landscape of hardwood forest, glades, dolomite bedrock, and more than 40 caves, including Fisher Cave. Acquired by Missouri in 1927, the park was heavily developed in the 1930s by Civilian Conservation Corps crews, whose trails, buildings, and surviving structures still carry historic significance. It also preserves the remains of the Hamilton Ironworks in its southeast corner. In the late 1970s, citizen opposition halted a proposed dam that would have flooded much of the park, making the site a notable Missouri environmental victory.
