Meramec Caverns near Stanton, Missouri, is a 4.6-mile limestone cave system in the Ozarks that has been used by people for centuries and became one of the state’s best-known roadside attractions. Native Americans sheltered there, Europeans began exploring it in 1722, and it was worked for saltpeter in the 18th century and again during the Civil War before Confederate guerrillas destroyed the operation. A larger extent of the cave system was discovered in 1933, and Lester B. Dill opened it as a tourist destination in 1935. Closely tied to U.S. Highway 66, it became famous for its advertising, striking formations, public events, and film appearances.
