Lee Metcalf Wilderness is a protected wilderness area in Montana's northern Rocky Mountains, established in 1983 and divided into four separate parcels: Bear Trap Canyon, Spanish Peaks, Taylor-Hilgard, and Monument Mountains. Bear Trap Canyon, along the Madison River, was the first designated wilderness managed by the Bureau of Land Management, while the other units are jointly overseen by the Beaverhead-Deerlodge and Gallatin national forests. Named for Congressman Lee Metcalf and protected under the 1964 Wilderness Act, it has no roads or buildings and bans logging, mining, and motorized or mechanized travel. Its preserved alpine landscapes provide an important refuge for wildlife, including an exceptionally dense grizzly bear population and many other large mammals and birds.
