Snake Mountain, a Blue Ridge mountain on the North Carolina–Tennessee border east of Zionville, rises in two close summits, the higher reaching 5,564 feet and the lower 5,518 feet, the highest point in Tennessee’s Johnson County. It stands at the head of several watersheds, with streams flowing toward the North Fork New River, the South Fork New River, and the Watauga River. Snake Mountain Ridge follows the state line from the mountain’s main mass, with western outcrops including Sugartree Ridge and Hessian Ridge. The mountain also figured in regional travel, as the Old Buffalo Trail and Daniel Boone Trail were said to converge near its foot at Zionville.
