Mathew Mound, in southwestern Ohio near Evendale, is a Native American archaeological site from the Woodland period, likely built by people of the Adena or Hopewell traditions. Though only about 4.5 feet high and just over 60 feet across, it is especially valuable because it has never been excavated. As an intact burial mound, it preserves a rare opportunity to study Woodland funerary practices without the disruption seen at many similar sites. Archaeologists believe it may contain burials and grave goods. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, its importance rests on preservation rather than size.
