Mount Zwischen
Nature
Mount Zwischen is a prominent 12,011-foot summit in Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Range, part of the Rocky Mountains, standing on a divide that separates wilderness areas, national forests, and counties. Its name, adopted in 1970 after the mountain had been known as Green Mountain, comes from the German word for “between,” reflecting its position between Mosca Pass and Medano Pass as well as between surrounding administrative boundaries. About 32.1 miles northeast of Alamosa, it rises between the Great Sand Dunes and Sangre de Cristo wilderness areas. In 2010, the lightning-caused Medano Fire burned 6,000 acres on and around its slopes.
