Mount Herard is a 13,345-foot summit in the Sangre de Cristo Range of southern Colorado, within the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness of Great Sand Dunes National Preserve. About 15 miles southeast of Crestone, it is one of Colorado’s thirteeners. The peak was first known as Medano Peak, and because it has seven separate summits, the Colorado Mountain Club proposed the name Mount Seven in 1970. In 1984 it was renamed for Ulysses Herard, who homesteaded on its slopes in 1876. Also recorded as Herard Peak, Mount Cleveland, and XL Mountain, the mountain links local settlement history with the remote wilderness setting around the dunes.
