About one hundred years before this account, Hazel Thomas Hathaway died during the great influenza epidemic, leaving five children with her husband, James Blain Hathaway, in Gibsonburg. Almost exactly two years later James also died, despite his expressed wishes that the children not be separated, and the five children, the youngest barely two, were scattered among different families across northwestern Ohio and never lived together again. Hope Celestia, the oldest daughter, married Virgil Kent and lived in Defiance, Ohio; Audry married Bill Kuhlman and lived north of Woodville; Florence Hazel married Walter Vogelmann and lived in places including Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Merrill, Wisconsin; Loren was adopted by the Trautman family, became half owner of Brandes & Trautman in Elmore, Ohio, served as a pilot in Europe during World War II, and married Annette Margaret Willett; and James, the oldest brother, worked for Frigidaire during the Depression before taking over a farm in Lindsey, Ohio. Loren, the youngest and last surviving member, died in 2015. Hazel and James Blain are buried in Quinshan Cemetery near Gibsonburg, and their children have all since died.
