During the Battle of Brandy Station, Union Lieutenant Colonel Percy Wyndham advanced from Brandy Station and centered his attack on this spot, with the 1st New Jersey Cavalry ascending the slope on the right, the 1st Maryland Cavalry in the center, and the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry circling the southern base of Fleetwood Hill toward the eastern crest. Just before the Federal troopers reached the summit, the 12th Virginia Cavalry charged up from the opposite side, rode over the plateau, and smashed into the 1st New Jersey. The New Jersey cavalrymen slashed aside the 12th Virginia and gained the summit, while the 12th Virginia lost its battle flag in the savage fighting, the only regimental standard captured that day. The 35th Battalion Virginia Cavalry and the 6th Virginia, both from General William E. Jones's Brigade, then galloped up the northern slopes and joined the fight. The struggle swung wildly back and forth between Jones's Brigade and Wyndham's Brigade as tactical cohesion collapsed when officers were killed, and choking dust in the hot morning air made it difficult to tell friend from foe.
