Near here stood old Fort Mitchel, erected in October, 1861. It was the scene of several skirmishes in September, 1862, between CSA forces under Gen. Henry Heth and USA troops under Gen. Lew Wallace. It was a major anchor in a line of seven forts defending Cincinnati. The forts ran along the hills around Covington for about 10 miles, from Bromley on the river to the west east to the river near Fort Thomas.
