From 1933 to 1935, C.C.C. Company 1370-2386, known as Camp John J. Pershing, occupied its original site near here before moving to Nottoway County. One of the most popular New Deal programs, the Civilian Conservation Corps was created to promote conservation of natural resources and provide employment training during the Great Depression. In this county, C.C.C. Company 1370-2386 built roads, fire trails, and fire towers, and undertook extensive reforestation efforts.
