The Staunton and Parkersburg Turnpike was established by act of the Virginia Assembly in 1824. Its first bridge, of wood on stone piers, was built in 1829. A second bridge, made of wood and covered, was built in 1847. A third bridge of iron was built in 1890, and a fourth bridge of concrete was built in 1922.
