Laid out as Buckingham in 1697, Bristol began as an early river port. Chartered on Nov. 14, 1720, it became the third oldest borough in Pennsylvania. From 1705 to 1726 it served as the county seat of Bucks, and for over two hundred years it was a center of travel and trade.
