Mount Moosilauke, a 4,802-foot peak at the southwestern end of New Hampshire’s White Mountains, is known for its broad, treeless summit, sweeping views, and the Appalachian Trail crossing its open crown, a landscape that helped inspire the nickname “Gentle Giant.” Its Abenaki name has uncertain meanings, most often rendered as “bald place.” The mountain also stands out for its Lower Devonian metamorphic geology, an early winter high-country weather observatory established in 1869–1870, and a recreation history that includes skiing and hiking. Long associated with Dartmouth College, it is often regarded as Dartmouth’s mountain.
