Originally cast in Seville, Spain, in December 1776 as a field artillery piece, this cannon was positioned within the walls of Manilla, Phillipines, for approximately 100 years. It was among the artillery captured during the Spanish-American War in 1898 by Brigadier General Lloyd Wheaton, the first volunteer to enlist in Peoria for the Civil War, who inscribed it as a gift to the City of Peoria on November 3, 1899.
