One night, an Indian came to Baraga asking the Blackrobe to go to his lodge to minister to his dying mother. After giving the Indian and his dog food, warmth, and rest, Baraga prepared to leave early the next morning with a sled loaded with necessary provisions and a second dog borrowed from a villager. When that dog soon became obstinate and refused to continue, they released it, and Baraga and the Indian took turns helping the original dog pull the sled. After a journey of three days, they reached the village, where Father Baraga administered the sacraments to the aged woman, who died shortly afterward. No time or distance kept Baraga from carrying out his service of God.
