This area was first explored in April 1775 by Wm. McConnell, Charles Lecompte, and a party from Penn. Buffalo herds had stamped down the undergrowth and ground around the spring, giving the town its name. McConnell and Lecompte were in the Battle of Blue Licks, KY., in 1782.
