Lighthouse tender boats supplied the Station by crossing Dungeness Bay from the mainland. Over the years at least four docks were built, and storms often destroyed them. The original dock was constructed about 1857, and although it is unknown whether it was built before the lighthouse, it was likely the only way brick and other materials for lighthouse construction were landed on the spit. A boathouse and ways were also built, with the ways facilitating putting a boat in and out of the water, often by means of a cart on a track. The dock was completely or partially reconstructed in 1878, 1893/94, and 1905/06, and at least twice the wharf was destroyed by storms. This structure was the facility's lifeline and the easiest connection with the mainland, and most supplies, including coal for the station, moved through the docks. In 1875, the year after construction of the steam whistle, a 1,350 foot tramway was built and used at least in part to transport coal to the whistle, and it also brought supplies to the station's keepers. The tram initially ran to the steam whistle by way of the lighthouse building on the south side. Sometime before 1962, the dock of the last wharf was destroyed by a storm, and the remaining building was removed about 1984.
