Boeuf Wildlife Management Area is a fifty-one-thousand, one-hundred-ten-acre protected wetland and bottomland forest in northeast Louisiana near Columbia. Managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, it preserves a diverse mosaic of bottomland hardwoods, cypress-tupelo swamp, sloughs, and old lakes, with plant communities shaped by elevation and water levels. Higher ground supports species such as willow oak, water oak, sweetgum, and persimmon, while lower areas favor overcup oak, bitter pecan, honey locust, cypress, and tupelo gum. A greentree reservoir and moist-soil impoundments provide habitat for waterfowl and other wetland species, and the area remains an important example of the lower Mississippi Valley’s once far more extensive wetland ecosystems.
