Lonesome Dove Baptist Church was organized in February 1846 in the home of Chas and Lucinda Throop, three miles east, by 12 Baptists, and 11 more joined the next day. Elder J. Hodge and Deacon James Gibson formed the presbytery, and the first building at this site was erected in 1847, when John Freeman was elected elder after serving as teacher and part-time preacher since 1846. He served as permanent pastor from 1847 to 1857. In the adjoining cemetery rest many Tarrant County pioneers, including several among the first elected officials when the county was organized in 1850. Constituents included Hall Medlin, Clerk John Freeman, Moderator Nancy (Harris) Freeman, Mary Medlin Anderson, Susanah (Medlin) Foster, Lucinda (Foster) Leonard, Felix Mullikin, Rachel Foster Mullikin, Henry Suggs, Saleta (Foster) Suggs, and Henry Atkinson.
