Jerimoth Hill, in Foster near the Connecticut line, is Rhode Island’s highest point at 812 feet, though its summit is notably gentle, reached by a short path with little elevation gain. Named for early settler Jerimoth Brown, the hill later became associated with Brown University after Walter Raymond Turner donated the high point and surrounding access in the 20th century. Brown used the site for astronomy because its dark skies were far from Providence’s light pollution. Long prized by highpointers, Jerimoth Hill was once difficult to reach because access crossed private property, but after ownership changes the land was opened more regularly and ultimately transferred to the state.
