Alum Creek State Park in central Ohio surrounds a reservoir created by Alum Creek Dam, completed in 1974 under flood-control plans authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1962. Long before the lake, the valley held more than 2,000 years of human history, including Adena habitation, burial mounds, Lenape communities, early settlement by Moses Byxbe, and War of 1812 defenses such as Fort Cheshire. The area was also tied to the Underground Railroad along the Sycamore Trail and near Africa Road. Today, former farmland and secondary forest frame a major recreation area known for boating, fishing, trails, camping, and Ohio’s largest inland beach.
