Miller State Park in Peterborough and Temple, New Hampshire, centers on 2,290-foot Pack Monadnock and is the state’s oldest state-run park. Established in 1891 with a 3-acre summit gift, it grew to 533 acres through later donations and purchases. Pack Monadnock, named from an Indian word meaning “little,” is noted for its paved auto road, a renovated seasonal fire tower, and the Wapack Trail. Its summit once held two hotels, and nearby pastures used for grazing cattle from Massachusetts extended almost to the top until 1901 before returning largely to forest. The park honors James Miller, a War of 1812 brigadier general and later first governor of Arkansas Territory.
