During World War I from 1917 to 1919, the boys of Byrd Township served the American colors for liberty and humanity. Those named were Earl H. Baird, E. Victor Bennett, Walter F. Bennett, Frank Brooks, George B. Brown, Alonzo Davis, John W. Gaffin, Raymond K. Kirkpatrick, George H. Miller, Walter E. Miller, Harvey H. Milligan, Fred Pickerill, Horace M. Pickerill, Lynn Pickerill, Byron N. Pittenger, Herschel G. Pittenger, W. Verner Pittenger, Wilbur Plummer, Hamner P. Purdin, Arthur Reeves, Glenn Reeves, Howard Rickey, Elden D. Stairs, Louis Swanger, James Sydnour, Grover Wiles, Ray Self, Charles R. Sroufe, Emery H. Sroufe, Stanley Sroufe, and G. Olin Wilson. Walter E. Miller was killed in action, and Frank Brooks and Horace M. Pickerill died in service.
