Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park in southwestern Utah lies between Mount Carmel Junction and Kanab near U.S. Highway 89. Its striking pink dunes, backed by red sandstone cliffs, formed from eroded Navajo Sandstone as winds passing between the Moquith and Moccasin Mountains deposited sand here over thousands of years. Estimated to be 10,000 to 15,000 years old, the dunes became a state park in 1963. The park's 3,370 acres support recreation including camping, hiking, off-road driving, photography, and sandboarding, while a 265-acre conservation area protects sensitive habitat for species found almost nowhere else, including the endemic Coral Pink Sand Dunes tiger beetle and most remaining Welsh's milkweed.
