Vaucluse was built by Jacob Yoder about 1806 and was known as Beechland until his death. A Revolutionary War soldier and Indian fighter, Yoder left Fort Redstone, Pennsylvania, in 1782 on the first flatboat to descend the Mississippi River. He arrived in New Orleans with a cargo of produce, then bought hides and furs to sell in Baltimore. He was buried on the farm in 1832, and the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
