John Summerfield Staples served in Company C, 176th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Civil War. Born on August 15, 1845, and dying on January 11, 1888, he was also a representative recruit for President Abraham Lincoln in the 2nd Regiment, District of Columbia Volunteers.
