Esopus Meadows Light is an active Hudson River lighthouse near Esopus, New York, standing on a granite foundation in the river and reachable only by boat. The first light at this site was built after the town ceded the location to the federal government in 1838, but flooding and ice damaged it so severely that it had to be replaced. The present wooden lighthouse was completed in 1871 and lit in 1872. Designed by Albert Dow, it is the last wooden lighthouse on the Hudson River and the only one there with a clapboard exterior. After closure and decline, it was restored and preserved as a distinctive surviving aid to navigation.
