Tumalo Mountain
Nature
Tumalo Mountain is a shield volcano in central Oregon’s Cascade Range, near Mount Bachelor and linked to the nearby Tumalo Volcanic Center. Later ice-age glaciation reshaped it, carving a large cirque into its northeast flank that is now popular with backcountry skiers. A route on the southwest side provides a relatively accessible climb to the summit. From the top, views extend across several prominent central Oregon peaks, including Broken Top, Mount Bachelor, and the Three Sisters complex. A United States Forest Service fire lookout tower stood on the summit from the 1930s until its abandonment in the 1970s and was later removed.
