Pysht Formation
Nature
The Pysht Formation is a geologic formation on Washington’s northern Olympic Peninsula, exposed in outcrops in Clallam County. It preserves Paleogene fossils that were deposited in what appears to have been an offshore marine environment. Its fossil record includes cartilaginous fish, mammals, birds, and crustaceans, showing the diversity of life present there. As a fossil-bearing stratigraphic unit, it provides important evidence for the marine ecosystems that once existed in this part of Washington deep in the geologic past.
