Spruce Railroad Trail follows a former Port Angeles Western Railroad grade along Lake Crescent west of Port Angeles and now serves as a lakeside route within the Olympic Discovery Trail. Built during World War I for the Spruce Production Division to haul spruce for aircraft manufacture, the rail line was finished in 1919, too late for that wartime role, and was abandoned in 1951. Today the trail is valued for its gentle grade, shoreline scenery, and broad accessibility. Its notable features include Harrigan Point, Devils Punch Bowl, and the McFee and Daley-Rankin railroad tunnels, both reopened after major reconstruction that restored full public use.
