Frank Bell, Jr. (1893-1963), son of Flavilla “Flavey” Bell and Frank Bell, Sr., married Ollie V. Caldwell Bell (1890-1974), daughter of Chisolm Trail and Butler Ranch Black cowboy Thomas Caldwell, in 1918 after his discharge from the US Army. They had five children together—Frank III, Eunice, Evelyn, Alonzo, and Vera Lee—and also raised Earl, Frank’s son from a previous marriage. Soon after marrying, they opened Bell’s Store, living in quarters at the back with their oldest children, and in 1926 they designed and built a cottage-style house on the property next to the store. Frank brought electricity to Bell’s Store in 1929 and helped residents of The Settlement get electricity in their homes. Ten years later, he began a real estate career subdividing land into residential lots and custom building houses, many of them designed by Ollie Bell. By the 1940s, Frank, Jr. and Ollie owned a community store, a hotel, and Cafe 348, while Frank also owned a service station with his sons, was a partner in the BA&P Realty Company and Lumber Yard, and was instrumental in creating Carver Park, the first African American county park in Texas. Their children became successful members of the La Marque and west Texas City communities, and today the house is held in a partnership of their last surviving child, Vera Bell Gary, and Frank and Ollie’s 14 grandchildren.
