Hannah Watts was born in 1758 while the Indian War was raging in New England. Around 1760, her father, Captain Samuel Watts, moved the family from Haverill, Massachusetts, to Falmouth, Maine, where they lived for a few years before joining many other families in 1769 to settle on Chandler's River in Jonesboro. Josiah Weston arrived in Jonesboro on July 22, 1772, with his sisters Elizabeth and Rebecca, and at Chandler's River he became acquainted with the Watts family. In October 1774, Josiah Weston married Hannah, the second child of Captain Watts, when she was sixteen years old. Shortly afterward, on a gloomy morning in June 1775, the people of Jonesboro received word from their neighbors in Machias that a British man-of-war would arrive the next day to capture the town. From this grew the episode in which Hannah and her sister-in-law Rebecca trekked through the woods to Machias carrying ammunition to aid in the battle. Hannah and Josiah had thirteen children; eleven lived to marry, and all but two raised large families. Josiah lived to age 77, and Hannah was 97 when she died.
