David Wark Griffith, an Oldham County native buried here, was renowned as the director-producer of The Birth of a Nation, a film drama of the Civil War and post-bellum era, and also of Intolerance, Orphans of the Storm, and Broken Blossoms. He created dramatic and photographic effects, including the close-up and fade-out, and he brought out Mary Pickford, Lillian and Dorothy Gish, and other stars.
