Watres Lodge, built in 1903 in the Adirondack Great Camp style by local farmers and craftsmen hired by then congressman and coal mine operator William Connell, was constructed with local oak trim and architectural features, Tennessee yellow pine for the interior walls, floors, ceilings, and exterior shingles, and native stone for its support structure and foundation, some of it glacial deposited. Its interior work was all virgin pine, entirely knot free, and its design included 13 gables, separate maids quarters, a kitchen cooling breezeway, a large wooden pantry with oak china closets, and an exterior dining porch. The house also had gas lighting throughout, steam heat, a walk-in cooling box made of American Chestnut wood, gravity fed water serving the 3 bath rooms and kitchen, two fireplaces, a main parlor, a huge dining room, 9 bedrooms, dual stairways, and original natural paneling that remains today. The original coal cooking stoves, the 3 large stone washing sinks, and the rustic branch railings on the front of the house and porches are missing. Connell Park and the lodge were sold to Col. Louis Watres in 1912 as the first of the properties he obtained to assemble the land required to build Lake Wallenpaupack. In 1966, the lodge and surrounding property were gifted by the family to Lacawac Sanctuary Foundation, a non profit volunteer organization, and in 1986 it was renamed Watres Lodge in honor of Arthur Watres, grandson of the Colonel and benefactor of the foundation. The lodge is used today for conferences, environmental classes and lectures, and to house visiting scientists and researchers. The Boat House once stood by the small filled-in land area projecting into Lake Lacawac at the current dry dock, where it held the family’s row boats and fishing gear and for a time a small wooden steam boat used by Connell on the lake. It was removed prior to 1948 after neglect during the war years, and it is not planned to be replaced in order to keep Lake Lacawac in a totally pristine state.
