More than 325 non-natives attended the Pierre's Hole rendezvous, including 90 trappers of the American Fur Company, 100 men of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, several smaller fur companies, and numerous free trappers, together with 120 lodges of Nez Perce and 80 lodges of Flatheads. Among those present were Jim Bridger, Nathaniel Wyeth, Joe Meek, Alexander and Preset Sinclair, Thomas Fitzpatrick, Robert Campbell, and three Sublette brothers. On July 17, a battle broke out between trappers and Gros Ventres. The Indians took refuge behind a barricade southwest of here, then escaped at night, leaving 26 dead. The trappers and their allies lost 13 men.
