Attempted Native American Deportation and Relocation
History
3
On December 26, 1873, at this site, the government attempted to deport and relocate the family of Ahuchoga, also known as Blue Wing, Chief of the Winnebago (Ho-Chunk), to a reservation in Nebraska. A group of Reedsburg area citizens stood against the government soldiers and forced them to retreat. This protest is believed to have played an important part in pushing the United States government to abandon its policy of Native American relocation.
