Wheeler Drive honors Major General Joseph Wheeler, a USMA 1859 graduate who commanded the 2nd Cavalry Corps of the Confederate Army of Tennessee. A renowned raider, he guarded the army’s flanks, maintained headquarters near the present Depot site, and covered the Confederate retreat. He later served as a member of Congress from 1881 to 1883 and from 1885 to 1900, became a Major General of U.S. Volunteers in 1898 during the Spanish American War and the Philippine Insurrection, and was appointed Brigadier General, USA. He was regarded as one of the nation’s great cavalry leaders. He was born at Augusta, Georgia, on September 10, 1836, and died on January 25, 1906.
