Felix "Doc" Blanchard grew up in Bishopville. The impact of family, sports, and a disciplined military career was the catalyst of his life. Drafted in 1943, he was recruited by the coach at the United States Military Academy at West Point to play football. At their first practice, he met Glenn Davis, and the pair soon became known throughout the world as "Mr. Inside" and "Mr. Outside." He earned the Heisman Trophy in 1945, was All American in 1944, 1945, and 1946, and also received the Maxwell Memorial Trophy and the Sullivan Award. During the Vietnam conflict, he completed 84 combat missions.
