On March 6, 1781, General Thomas Sumter and a force of 250 men were attacked by a British detachment commanded by Major Fraser about 3 miles northeast at the head of Stirrup Branch. In a running fight, Sumter, known as the Gamecock, retreated along a road near here to Ratcliff's Bridge on Lynches River, 3 miles southeast.
